Bitternut Hickory

Scientific Name: Carya cordiformis

One of several common Hickories, this species tends to have a shallow "X" pattern to the bark. Sometimes it almost looks like the raised portions are melted back into the tree.

Pignut Hickory has deeper grooves to its "X" pattern. Shagbark Hickory has bark that flakes off in large strips.
